Howard helped defend our country during the Viet Nam war.  He was instrumental in having the Memorial for the Veterans that is located at the High School. 

Howard also contributed a chapter in a book entitled 'Vietnam: Our Story, One On One'.  This book contains 50 stories from Viet Nam Veterans.  Howard's chapter starts on page 283.  The book was compiled by Gary D. Gullickson.  If you have a chance you should read Howard's chapter and when you see him, please remember to say Thank You.  Not only to him, but to all Veterans and anyone who is currently serving his/her country.

Four to join Berwick Academic Hall of Fame*

Berwick - Berwick's Academic Hall of Fame will welcome an artist, a Geisinger leader, a music teacher, and an autism specialist this Saturday at 4 p.m.

The honorees: Jane Chapin, a 1968 graduate; Michael Evans, 1988 graduate; Joseph Lavecchio, class of 1970; and Vanessa Troiani, a 2000 alumnae.

Jane Chapin - Chapin used her artistic skill to author a book that is benefiting America's wounded veterans.  She grew up sketching and painting the people and scenes around her, taking her first oil painting class at age 10.  Chapin put herself through art school at Kutztown University by doing portraits.  After she earned her degree in 1978, she volunteered to teach art with the Peace Corps in El Salvador.

Chapin believes in painting in the open air.  Using a traditional approach, she completes small studies on location, using them as reference material for her studio work.

A nationally recognized artist, Jane's work has been exhibited in Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, International Guild of Realism, American Women Artists, and the Richard Schmid Fine Art Auction.  Her plain air work has been exhibited around the country.

In 2007, she began a journey to paint at least once in every state.  From her journeys, she authored "Land of the Free:  A Painter's Chronicle of Our 50 States and Their Heroes."

Book sales benefit the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, which provides full scholarship grants and education and family counseling to the surviving children of special operations personnel.

Jane is the daughter of the late Willard and Ellen Chapin.  She has a sister, Linda and a brother Jay.

Robert served in the U.S. Navy from Dec. 1968 - Nov. 1972, as an Aviation Electrician.  He served off the coast of Vietnam during 1972.

Robert has taken an early retirement from PPL and is enjoying his retirement.
